Pomodoro for ADHD & Easily Distracted Minds

Easily distracted, hard to sense time, hard to get started — for exactly these, splitting time and making it visible helps. Here’s how to use Pomodoro in a way that fits.

Make time something you can see

When time is hard to sense, you get “hours vanished” or “nothing got done.” Put a timer that clearly shows the time left in front of you: “how many minutes left” becomes tangible and switching gears gets easier.

Make sets boldly short

If 25 minutes feels long, 10–15 is fine. Shorter is easier to finish, and finished sets stack up as wins. “Maybe too short” is often just right; extend it as you get used to it.

Break tasks down absurdly small

Big tasks overwhelm you before you start. Shrink them as far as they’ll go.

  • “Study” → just “open the textbook
  • “Answer email” → write “just one
  • Make the first step the task name (start, and you continue)

Don’t “wander off” on breaks

When you distract easily, returning from a break is the hard part. Time your breaks, and keep break activities to easy-to-return ones like standing up and stretching. Phones and games are hard to come back from — keep them away during breaks.

Keep results in a form that “builds up”
