How Long Should a Pomodoro Be? (Ratios Beyond 25/5)

The classic Pomodoro is 25 minutes of focus, 5 of break. But plenty of people find that too short — or too long. What matters is matching the length to how long you can actually stay focused. Here’s how to find your ratio.

Start with the classic 25/5

If you’re unsure, begin with 25 minutes focus → 5 minutes break. It caught on because it’s “not too short, not too long” for most people. Take a longer 15–30 minute break every 4 sets.

If focus flows, try 50/10 or 90 minutes

If “25 minutes cuts me off just as I get going,” a longer interval suits you. For deep work — writing, coding, research — many use 50/10 or blocks of 90 minutes.
