Can’t Focus? Fixes When Pomodoro Isn’t Working

“I tried Pomodoro but I can’t focus / can’t keep it up / it doesn’t fit me” — almost always, a small change fixes it. Let’s go through the fixes by cause.

Cause 1: The length doesn’t fit

Focus dies at 25 minutes, or it’s too short to get going — both mean the length is off. Shorten to 15, or stretch to 50 — whatever you can finish. There’s no single correct length.

Cause 2: Breaks derail you

A 5-minute break becomes 30 on your phone — that’s not willpower, it’s a system problem. Time your breaks too, and put your phone out of reach during them. Make it a break you can return from.

Cause 3: You just keep getting distracted

If notifications or stray thoughts pull you away mid-session, fix the environment first.

  • Phone ==out of sight== (another room, in your bag)
  • Close unrelated tabs and notifications
  • Chores that pop into mind — write them down and defer them

Cause 4: You’re trying to be perfect

If only “perfectly focused” days count, you won’t last. One set is enough. It’s not all-or-nothing — count any day you sat down for even 5 minutes. Lower the bar and focus comes back.

On rough days, start with “one minute”

When nothing works, “just one minute” is plenty. Starting is usually enough to keep going. FocusBlock turns focused time into blocks, minute by minute, so even a tiny step becomes visible progress.

FAQ for when you can’t focus

Pomodoro feels like it doesn’t suit me.

Usually the length is just off. Instead of forcing 25 minutes, try 15 or 50 — a length you can finish — and it gets easier to sustain.

I derail during breaks.

Time your breaks and keep your phone out of reach. Make returning the default by fixing the system, not your willpower.

What about days with zero motivation?

“Just one minute” is enough. Starting tends to lead to continuing, so lower the barrier to begin as far as possible.
